Family Devotional 3-12-17 Kids

Adult & Teen Discussion Guide

1. Primary Question: What is your life built on?

When we have Jesus’ teaching at the center of our lives, that foundation gives strength to everything else we do. When we build our lives on anything else, the results can be disastrous.

2. Application & Talking Point

Our world offers a variety of options to use as the foundation for your life.

Things like:

  • Family
  • Education
  • Health & Fitness
  • Success & Achievements
  • Wealth & Security

What would you add to that list? Are any of these things inherently bad? They may be good building materials, but they make for a shaky foundation.

In the end, there’s no substitute. Jesus said obeying His teaching is the only way to make sure the foundation of your life is solid.

3. Bible Verse

Matthew 7:24–27

“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

4. Wrap up Discussion

People substitute a lot of things for God as their foundation. What do you think is the most common?

5. Prayer Focus

Take a few minutes as a family and ask God to keep His teaching at the center of your life by speaking to you through the Bible, friends, prayer, and church.

Family with Kids Discussion Guide

1. Activity

Grab a handful of small items from around the house like blocks or books. Ask the kids to make the highest stack they can. Then ask them to re-stack their tower with a pillow as the base.

2. Bible Verse

Matthew 7:24-25

“These words I speak to you are not incidental additions to your life, homeowner improvements to your standard of living. They are foundational words, words to build a life on. If you work these words into your life, you are like a smart carpenter who built his house on solid rock. Rain poured down, the river flooded, a tornado hit—but nothing moved that house. It was fixed to the rock.”

3. Application & Talking Point

It’s hard to build something big when you don’t have a good foundation at the bottom.

Q: Did you know your life has a foundation?

Q: What do you think it is?

Q: What should it be?

Q: Would our house be strong if we used windows as the foundation?

Q: How about pillows for the foundation?

A: No! It needs a strong foundation.

Our life needs a foundation, too – God’s word. When we do what Jesus says, we put Him in the most important place in our lives. Everything else is built on that foundation.

4. Wrap up Discussion

What’s one thing Jesus said to do that you can work on today?

5. Prayer Focus

Take a few minutes as a family and ask God to keep His teaching at the center of your life by speaking to you through the Bible, friends, prayer, and church.
