Main theme: The Ten Commandments. God gives us the foundation of the Law.

A few notes about the Ten Commandments:

  • This is the only communication in history written directly by God (not transcribed). God Himself wrote on the tablets.
  • The law is written on our hearts (Jeremiah 31:33; Romans 2:14-15)

Verse 1-2: The Preamble

  • God Himself spoke
  • God reminds Israel of what He’s done for them

Commandments 1-4: Our Relationship With God

1. No other gods

  • God alone has the right to be jealous/demand worship
  • Monotheism vs. polytheism vs. universalism
  • Modern applications: What do we worship over God?

2. No idols

  • Emphasis on images and forms (Isaiah 44:9-20; Jeremiah 2:26-28)
  • God will be known not for His form, but for His character and actions

3. Don’t take God’s name in vain

  • Respect God’s name
  • Don’t swear by anything (Matthew 5:33-37; James 5:12)

4. Remember the Sabbath

  • It was meant to be a blessing, not a burden (Mark 2:23-27)
  • God designed us for periods of rest
  • Keep it holy (pure, untainted)

Commandments 5-10: Our Relationship With Others

5. Honor your Father & Mother

  • This commandment comes with a promise (Ephesians 6:1-4; Deuteronomy 5:16)

6. Don’t kill (murder)

  • Capital punishment / war / murder
  • Hatred, anger is tantamount to killing (Matthew 5:21-22)

7. Don’t Commit Adultery

  • Marital infidelity vs. sexuality outside of marriage (1 Cor. 7:1-5)
  • Lust is tantamount to adultery (Matthew 5:27-28)

8. Don’t steal

  • Don’t steal from God (Malachi 3:8-12)

9. Don’t bear false witness

  • Don’t lie (Proverbs 12:22; Colossians 3:9)
  • Don’t gossip (Psalm 101:5)

10. Don’t Covet
