John chapter twelve is full of great stuff! I want to direct your attention to a verse of scripture that helps me form my own personal theology for life. This is verse twenty seven and the first part of verse twenty eight.
John 12:27–28 (NIV84) “Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. 28 Father, glorify your name!” Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.”
Let me set the stage for you. Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem has just taken place and these are now the last days of Jesus’ earthly ministry and he knows it. I have no doubt that Jesus knows that he is now just days away from great physical suffering and death. Jesus even says things in this chapter that reveal that he knows that he will be crucified.
Can you imagine what that would be like for you or me? How could you keep your mind focused on the tasks of the day if you knew that these things were just ahead of you? I can imagine a thousand things that would be running through my mind. My flesh would want to run. Notice what Jesus says…
…what shall I say? ‘Father save me from this hour’? No it was for this very reason I came to this hour. Father glorify your name!
Wow and double wow! Jesus is now and always will be my hero!
Here’s how this helps me form my personal theology for life. God has a thing for me to do. Some of what it will take for me to accomplish what God has called me to do will be hard. Maybe, really hard. I know that some of it will be hard because every day he’s preparing and adjusting me so that I’m ready for what tomorrow and all my tomorrows hold. You see, he promised me that he would not leave nor forsake me and that nothing would happen to me that I couldn’t handle. That has to mean one of two things: either everything in my life is going to seem easy to me or that he’s going to be working on me to make me stronger and stronger so that when hard things happen I’m ready. I know that it’s the second.
Jesus said that he was made for that ultimate hard moment. Somewhere out in my future, there’s one of those for me and you. In that hour I pray that you and I, prepared by the Holy Spirit, will say as Jesus did, “it was for this very reason that I came to his hour.”
With that kind of faith, anything is possible!!
P.S. I’m writing this on Friday, on my mac computer while I ride to Kansas to do a wedding. Literally, I’m typing while Jasen drives. When I finish this, I am going to e-mail it from my computer to Joni through a wireless link with my iphone which is acting as a mobile hotspot. Can you imagine what we can do with the world that we live in today? Amazing!
